Why More Options Make You Less Able to Choose
The intuition is that more choice is better, that a wider field of options can only improve your odds of a good outcome. The research says the opposite past a surprisingly low threshold.
Sheena Iyengar, a psychologist at Columbia, ran what became one of the most cited studies in decision science. At a grocery store, she set up a tasting booth that on some days displayed six varieties of jam and on other days twenty-four. The larger display drew more interest, but the smaller one drove far more actual purchases. Faced with six options, people chose and bought.
